Which Subarus have a CVT?
The 2010 Outback and Legacy 2.5i offered Lineartronic CVTs, while their 3.6R six-cylinder versions used five-speed automatics. The 2014 Forester offered a CVT, but the 2014 Outback and Legacy 3.6R still had five-speed automatics. The redesigned 2015 Outback and Legacy 3.6R switched to a high-torque Lineartronic CVT. A 2014 Tribeca had a five-speed automatic, and a BRZ automatic is a conventional stepped transmission. Manual-transmission models are another exception. Model year alone is not enough; we verify the engine and transmission.
How it works
As the effective diameter of one pulley changes, the other changes too. That gives the engine a range of ratios for acceleration and cruising. The animation is a simplified mechanical illustration, not a service diagram.
Signs worth checking
A new shudder, slipping sensation, delayed engagement, unusual noise, leak, warning light or change in the way the vehicle accelerates deserves a proper diagnosis. A symptom can come from the transmission, engine, AWD system or another cause.
The right fluid matters
CVT fluid requirements differ by model, year and transmission. The correct specification, fluid level and temperature-dependent procedure matter. We verify the exact vehicle before choosing a fluid or recommending a service; a generic transmission flush is not a substitute for the proper procedure.
When to service it
Follow the maintenance information for your model year and driving conditions. Subaru schedules can call for inspection or replacement at different intervals. We can review your use, mileage and service history and explain what applies to your car.
What we check
We begin with the concern, scan and test as appropriate, inspect for leaks, verify fluid and service history and discuss the findings before replacing parts.
CVT diagnosis and fluid service in Bellingham.
We first confirm that the specific Subaru has a CVT and identify its fluid specification. A shudder or warning light does not automatically mean the transmission must be replaced. Tell us the year, model, mileage, prior fluid service and exactly when the symptom occurs so we can discuss testing and the proper service procedure.
See our maintenance approach, diagnostics and model pages.
