SUBARU HEAD GASKETS / BELLINGHAM

Subaru head gasket diagnosis in Bellingham.

A head gasket seals the space between an engine block and cylinder head. When that seal fails, oil, coolant and combustion gases can go where they do not belong.

What does a head gasket do?

It seals three important paths at once: the combustion chamber, coolant passages and engine-oil passages. A failure may leak externally or allow fluids or gases to cross internally. The symptoms depend on where the gasket is leaking.

What might you notice?

Coolant loss with no clear puddle, an external oil or coolant leak, overheating, a sweet-smelling exhaust, bubbles in the cooling system, rough running or contaminated fluid can all be clues. None of these signs alone proves a head gasket failure; testing is how we separate it from a radiator, hose, thermostat or other problem.

Why stop driving if it overheats?

An overheating engine can suffer additional damage, including a warped cylinder head. If the temperature warning appears or the gauge climbs, stop safely and shut the engine off. Continuing to drive may turn an early repair into a much larger engine job.

How maintenance helps

Routine visits let us notice coolant loss, leaks and cooling-system problems early. Proper coolant and prompt diagnosis help protect the engine. Maintenance does not guarantee a gasket will never fail, but early attention can prevent an unnoticed leak from becoming more costly.

How we approach it

We start with the symptoms and history, inspect for external leaks, check cooling-system behavior and use appropriate tests before discussing repair. The engine and scope of damage determine the work and estimate.

Head gasket concerns at our Bellingham shop.

We look for the cause of coolant loss, overheating or an external leak before recommending a head gasket repair. Tell us when the symptom started, whether the vehicle overheated and what cooling work has been done. A failing hose, radiator or other component can resemble a gasket problem. If it is overheating now, stop driving safely and call us.
